Moving bins vs cardboard boxes: which is better?

Short answer: for a local move of a week or less, rented bins cost about the same as new cardboard, take less time and hold up better in Florida weather. Cardboard wins for long-distance moves, long-term storage, and very small moves where you can get free boxes.

Is renting bins better for the environment?

Mostly, yes, but it's closer than people think. Cardboard boxes are among the most recycled items in the country: the EPA reports a 96.5% recycling rate for corrugated boxes in 2018 (EPA[2]). The bigger win for bins is reuse. One bin replaces dozens of boxes over its life, and about 940,000 tons of corrugated boxes still ended up in U.S. landfills that year.
