When is move-in at Bethune-Cookman?

B-CU staggers fall move-in by class. In 2026, new students moved in August 8, returning students moved in August 12-14, and classes began August 17.

The 2025 schedule was even more detailed. Freshmen moved in August 9-10, then sophomores, juniors and seniors each had their own day, with band members arriving earlier.

The next move-in is January 2, 2027, for both new and returning students. Spring classes begin January 7.

Check in by 10 p.m. on the last official check-in date. Otherwise you can be declared a no-show unless you email ResLife@cookman.edu first.

  • Fall 2026 new students: August 8.
  • Fall 2026 returning students: August 12-14.
  • Spring 2027 everyone: January 2.
  • Early arrival may be approved for $25 per day, paid in advance, with no meal plan during the extra days.

What happens at check-in when you move into a B-CU hall?

Before you unpack, staff walk through your room with you. You both sign a Check-In/Check-Out Inventory Report that records any existing damage.

Take this step seriously. If you skip it or don't dispute a defect in writing, you lose the right to contest damage charges later.

Snap photos of the walls, floor, furniture and bathroom on day one. They help if questions come up at move-out.

Housing and Residence Life is in Lee Rhyant Honors Hall, open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. You can reach the office at 386-481-2424 or reslife@cookman.edu.

  • Bring your B-CU ID and your housing paperwork.
  • Note every scratch, stain or broken item on the inventory form.
  • Ask your hall staff about elevator access before carrying heavy items.

Which Bethune-Cookman residence hall will you live in?

Halls are mostly assigned by gender and class year. Freshman women live in the Bronson Complex, JaFlo Davis Hall and Phase II Building D.

Freshman men live in Marjorie Joyner Hall and Hanks Moorehead B. Upperclass women can live in Hanks Moorehead A or the Living Learning Center.

Honors students with at least a 3.0 GPA can choose Lee Rhyant Honors Residential Center, which is co-ed by wing. Every hall is within a ten-minute walk of classes, dining and recreation.

Several halls are three to five stories, and some have no elevators. Pack in loads you can carry up stairs.

  • Bronson Annex: five stories, suites, four students per bathroom.
  • Bronson Hall, Marjorie Joyner, JaFlo Davis: three stories.
  • Phase II C and D, Hanks Moorehead A and B: four stories, ADA accessible.

What should you bring to a B-CU dorm, and what is banned?

Each room comes with a bed, mattress, desk, dresser and wardrobe closet. WiFi and cable are included, so you don't need a router.

B-CU's appliance rules are strict. You may bring a microwave and a small fridge, but almost every other cooking appliance is banned.

Extension cords are on the banned list, so use a surge protector instead. Bring Command Strips for hanging things on the walls.

The official list doesn't give bed dimensions. Email Reslife@cookman.edu to confirm your sheet size before you shop.

  • Bring: linens, towels, hangers, shower shoes and a wastebasket.
  • Bring: desk lamp, clock radio, surge protector, iron and ironing board.
  • Bring: laundry, bath and cleaning supplies.
  • Fridge limit: 3.5 cubic feet or smaller and 1.5 running amps or less.
  • Banned: hot plates, air fryers, toasters, coffee makers, rice cookers, slow cookers and blenders.
  • Banned: extension cords, routers, plasma TVs, amplifiers and hoverboards.
  • Banned: candles, incense, wax warmers, extra furniture, waterbeds, weightlifting equipment and pets (guide dogs excepted).

How do moving out and breaks work at Bethune-Cookman?

Residence halls and the dining hall close for Christmas break and between the spring and summer semesters. You must arrange your own housing during those closures.

The 2026-27 calendar does not list hall closing dates. Fall 2026 finals run December 7-11, and spring 2027 finals run April 29-May 5, so plan around those weeks.

To check out, clean your room, remove all trash and return every key. Then contact the Housing and Residence Life Office, because simply leaving does not count.

Anything left behind at the end of the term is treated as abandoned. The university may dispose of it.

  • Thanksgiving 2026: November 25-29, university closed.
  • Spring break 2027: March 8-12.
  • Spring 2027 commencement: May 8.
  • Improper check-out fee: $75.
  • Unreturned key: at least $45, depending on the hall.
  • Late check-out may be approved for $25 per day, paid in advance.
  • Summer housing requires at least six credit hours.

Who can live off campus at B-CU, and where do students look?

Freshmen and sophomores must live on campus unless they qualify for an exemption. Exemptions include living with a parent within 50 road miles, being 21 or older, or being married.

Release requests are due July 15 for fall and November 15 for spring. B-CU accepts no requests after those dates.

Juniors, seniors and exempt students can use B-CU's off-campus housing site. Featured listings include Madison Pointe, Mira Crystal Lake, San Marco Apartments and Bellamy Daytona.

Bellamy Daytona lists furnished 3- to 5-bedroom units with individual leases and an 11-month lease. B-CU says it does not verify listings, so confirm details with each landlord.

  • Madison Pointe Apartments: 1-3 bedrooms.
  • Mira Crystal Lake: 1-3 bedrooms.
  • San Marco Apartments: 1-3 bedrooms.
  • Bellamy Daytona: 3-5 bedrooms, priced per bedroom.
  • The site also lists roommate searches and sublets.

How do you get around and park near Bethune-Cookman?

Four Votran routes serve campus: 6, 10, 18 and 60. Route 18 also reaches Daytona Beach International Airport, and Routes 10, 18 and 60 go to Volusia Mall.

A single adult ride costs $2.00, and an all-day pass is $4.00. Votran does not offer transfers, so a day pass helps on errand days.

If you bring a car, you need a campus parking decal from Campus Safety. Cars without one can be ticketed or towed, and spaces are not assigned.

  • Decal purchase info: 386-481-2982.
  • Visitors and helpers on move-in day need a temporary pass from Parking Services.
  • Daytona State College's main campus is also on Routes 10, 18 and 60.

What should out-of-state and international students know about mail and arrival?

The campus Post Office is in the Procurement Building. Package pickup runs 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays.

Letters can be picked up 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. You need your B-CU ID to claim registered or certified mail.

If you fly in, Votran Route 18 links the airport and campus. New Student Orientation is mandatory for freshmen and transfers, and families are encouraged to attend some sessions.

  • Ship bulky items to arrive after your move-in date.
  • Buy a small fridge locally to meet the 3.5-cubic-foot limit.
